Metro DC DSA votes to endorse Briana Urbina for New Carrollton mayoral election; chapter-wide GOTV operations underway

Earlier this week, MDC DSA members voted to endorse Briana Urbina in her special election race for mayor of New Carrollton, in northern Prince George’s County. The chapter voted in favor of her endorsement with a landslide 235 of 251 votes. At 10am on Sunday, October 18, MDC DSA will hold their kickoff canvass for Briana Urbina starting at New Carrollton’s Metro station. Afterward, the PG branch’s General Body Meeting will take place at 1:30pm in the New Carrollton Branch Library (7414 Riverdale Road). Urbina, as a city council member, has been a battler for the rights of workers in one of the county’s most diverse communities. The special election will be on Monday, November 9.

Election Day is approaching; just how Blue will the Blue Wave be? Congressional Progressive Staff Association (CPSA) cordially invites all MDC DSA members to join them on November 3 for an election night watch party in DC (location TBD).

DHS raids Rep. Ilhan Omar’s house in flagrant attack on resistance to Trump regime; socialists rallying TOMORROW to demand charges be dropped

In the dark, early hours of October 12, Trump’s cowardly cronies at the Department of Homeland Security stormed Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar’s DC residence, in an alarming and targeted escalation of the Department’s more-than-year-long unlawful occupation of the District. While the DHS claims they acted on a judicially authorized search warrant, the warrant itself builds on absurd questions of Omar’s family background and citizenship validity, attempting to substantiate rumors divorced from reality. The truth of this shameless raid could not be clearer. Trump and his puppets clumsily scheme to capitalize on the racist, xenophobic, and orientalist hatred they have long been cultivating to demonize a visibly brown, immigrant, Muslim politician who, for years, has courageously used her platform to fight back against his verbal abuse and rapidly growing fascist tendencies. Now, he lashes out in retaliation, threatening her and her family on bogus charges in a shoddy attempt to silence her and all others who continue to stand against him.

Metro DC DSA wholly condemns this raid and the Trump administration for manufacturing the political conditions that have normalized such political repression and physical violence, especially here in the heart of the American empire. DC has long experienced firsthand the dangers the corrupt Trump-Epstein ruling class presents to both resident safety and national democracy. Trump’s weaponization of federal officers to tamp down on political opponents such as Representative Omar comes amid the continuing unlawful occupation of the District and its residents. DC socialists know that none of these decisions occur in isolation, but in preparation for far more devastating fascist encroachment on the physical and political livelihood of both the District and the nation, especially as midterm elections near.

MDC DSA, alongside multiple DC-based community organizations, will host a rally TOMORROW, October 17, at 2pm outside the US Department of Justice (950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW) to demand the federal government drop its misinformed and manufactured charges against Representative Omar and all other political and community activists fighting to dismantle Trump’s soul-sucking chokehold over America. Learn more about the rally and RSVP here.

To keep building sustained resistance to the occupation, MDC DSA’s Community Defense Working Group, in partnership with Families Not Feds, will host a joint community meeting and testimony training on Saturday, October 24 at the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Library (3160 16th Street NW) in preparation for DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s November 5 public hearing on DC safety. Councilmember Pinto, an alleged Democrat, remains steadfast in her willful and sustained incompetence on materially combating Trump’s occupation of the District she claims to represent (read a more comprehensive history of Pinto’s failures as an elected official in the Washington Socialist).

Tenants and Stomp Out Slumlords prepare for Tenant Town Hall — Events on October 21, 25, 28

Stomp Out Slumlords and tenants across DC are gearing up for Janeese Lewis George’s Tenant Town Hall on October 28 at 5:30pm, during which they will tell the DC Democratic mayoral nominee about the slum conditions they’ve lived in, the harassment and retaliation they’ve faced, and the devastating impact of skyrocketing costs of living and rising eviction rates. Join SOS in preparing to inform Lewis George about what tenants need from the next administration and how DC agencies can better serve renters. SOS will host an all hands meeting on October 21 at 6:30pm to discuss strategies on maximizing DC tenant turnout for the meeting.

Additionally, join SOS and other MDC DSA working groups for an affordability canvass on October 25 to spread the word to more DC tenants about this vital opportunity to influence future housing policy and expand tenant rights across the District. Socialists will gather at 11am at Lyman’s Tavern before embarking to ensure the working class is empowered to make change alongside DSA-endorsed candidates Lewis George and Ward 1 Council candidate Aparna Raj.

Socialists canvass across Virginia to fight for Virginians’ rights — Multiple events this weekend

MDC DSA’s Yes On All 3 Campaign continues canvassing across Northern Virginia with additional support from multiple working groups. So far, the campaign has knocked on over 9,000 doors and is close to reaching its goal of connecting with 10,000 Virginians. With just three weekends left to go before Election Day on Tuesday, November 3, the campaign is surging in its outreach and education on these ballot measures to enshrine Virginians’ fundamental rights to vote and access reproductive healthcare into the state constitution, and strike its outdated ban on same-sex marriage. All Virginia residents should check their early voting location and make a plan to vote YES on all 3 ballot initiatives. RSVP to support canvassing efforts below:

Socialists, nurses, and DC residents plan rally to protect patients and the working class — Tuesday, October 27

As part of a national day of action to defend patients’ already limited access to vital healthcare — and the broader right to vote — from authoritarian overreach, DSA members will convene alongside National Nurses United and others in the District on Tuesday, October 27. The action will begin in Chinatown Park (5th Street NW/I Street NW intersection) at 5:45pm and proceed with a march on Risant Health headquarters (900 7th Street NW), a Kaiser affiliate, to spotlight the healthcare executives who have sacrificed the patients and communities they claim to serve in exchange for meeting the demands of the ruling technofascist capitalist class. The rally calls on executives to refuse to collaborate with ICE officers who barge into hospitals and healthcare spaces in a violation of patient safety, support the validity of every vote counted during this midterm election season (and beyond), divest from and end all partnerships with authoritarian corporations like Palantir, and protect the rights of workers to organize. Learn more and register to attend here.

We Power DC X Extinction Rebellion’s wheatpasting session and fall social — Saturday, October 24 at 11am

We Power DC and Extinction Rebellion have rescheduled their joint wheatpasting session for October 24. Join them to hang up posters starting at DC’s Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro Station at 11am. Those of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend and bring friends, as materials and training will be provided. Help spread the word about the evils of Pepco and climate change, as well as the public power alternative, and tap into DC’s growing latent distrust of our utilities to grow the grassroots movement needed to challenge corporate power. After wheatpasting, all are invited to their fall social at Kalorama Park (1865 Kalorama Rd NW) at 1pm. RSVP for the wheatpasting and fall social events here.

BRIEFING!
Takoma Park Candidate Forum — Sunday, October 18 at 1:30pm

MDC DSA’s Montgomery County branch is co-sponsoring a forum with candidates for Takoma Park mayor and City Council ahead of the November 2026 election. This forum comes as ICE has abducted Takoma Park community members in the city and the City Council has ordered a review of the city’s rent stabilization policy, which is one of the strongest laws of its kind in the country. Come out and ask candidates how they will lead Takoma Park through these times. RSVP here.

MDC DSA Labor Working Group continues fight for worker power — October 19 and October 20

At its monthly General Meetings, the Labor Working Group (LWG) discusses updates on ongoing labor campaigns, identifies action steps for solidarity, hears from fellow activists and local unions for educational insight, and shares opportunities for further organizing. This hybrid event is open to both DSA members and supporters, so bring friends and co-workers: in-person will be at MLK Library, Room 401-F (901 G Street NW), while virtual attendance is available via Zoom link sent upon registration. To request accommodations to participate in this meeting, please email labor@mdcdsa.org. RSVP and receive Zoom link here.

The Labor Working Group actively practices solidarity across the DMV. Those looking to get involved should join the working group’s Solidarity Committee meeting on Monday, October 19 to learn about MDC DSA’s solidarity program, hear updates from active campaigns, and find out how to get involved with regular pickets, textbanks, wheatpastes, and other actions. This is a great entry point for interested DSA members and community allies of all levels of experience.

Bread and Rosewater, a leftist baking club run through Metro DC DSA, is holding their next meeting on Sunday, October 25 at 7pm in Penn Quarter. The club meets monthly to share homemade baked goods aligned to a member-chosen theme; this month’s spooky theme is to bake what scares/intimidates you or a recipe that you’ve never gotten right that has haunted you. Anyone interested in attending should fill out the interest form here to receive the exact location.

RECAP: Transnational Day of Action for Palestine and the fight ahead

This past Saturday, comrades at Palestinian Youth Movement called for a day of action to commemorate three years since Israel’s escalation of genocide in Gaza and its 680,000+ martyrs. Hundreds of DMV residents representing more than 30 organizations, including Metro DC DSA, took to the District’s streets to answer that call. Against solemn gray skies and puddled streets, MDC DSA’s socialist-red signs rose in stark contrast, unwaveringly labeling Trump as a fascist and war criminal, calling for a complete arms embargo on Israel, and reasserting the chapter’s steadfast commitment to a free Palestine. Speakers grounded the rally in the fight for collective liberation: whether for Palestine abroad or anyone in the struggle against fascism here at home, the same colonial and imperial systems work to exploit and oppress all workers and minority identities worldwide. Liberation from these systems for any single group is contingent on liberation for all groups. The fight for freedom extends beyond class identities, ethnic groups, and national borders, and begins with these physical displays of solidarity on the very DC streets that the American empire’s clownish rulers and their puppets walk.

After the rally, Palestinian politicians and community leaders reflected on the somber day and emphasized the audience’s critical role in escalating the struggle from the heart of the empire. In the DMV, solidarity and next steps forward include donating time to phonebanking efforts to end legislative support for military aid to Israel, supporting efforts to end local gas stations’ and event organizers’ financial entanglements with Israel-partnered oil supplier Chevron, and joining the fight to divest Virginia and Maryland state retirement systems’ bonds and pensions from Israeli companies through the VRS Divest and Maryland Break The Bonds campaigns.

INFO ACCESS

In Summer 2025, Trump unleashed his paramilitary puppet force of National Guard troops and ICE agents to occupy, threaten, and terrorize our neighbors throughout the DMV. In the year-plus of oppression, MDC DSA has been up front among progressive forces who have contested these goons, pushing back against extrajudicial kidnappings, violence, and chaos meant to coerce the DMV (and the US at large) into capitulating to fascism. Metro DC DSA and community allies of the deep-rooted DMV Left continue to resist these brownshirt forces and their orange overlord with community actions, providing educational resources and mass trainings to empower working people to make the fight theirs. Nationally, DSA’s growth into a 120,000-plus-member force has galvanized the working classes across Blue and Red corridors alike, those whom other politicians across the spectrum have long abandoned.

This is a movement by and for the everyday person. Join us in our fight to replace our current status quo, designed for profiteers and their captive politicians, with one designed for us. Here’s how to know about MDC DSA:

US maternity wards face wave of closures as Medicaid cuts kick in
Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ spending cuts will be fully felt next year, but hospitals are already feeling the squeeze

“Maternity wards across the United States are facing a wave of closures as cuts to federal Medicaid funding take effect, experts have warned. According to analysis by the non-profit Protect Our Care, 52 maternity wards have closed since the HR1 bill was announced in July 2025, with a further eight having announced their upcoming closure. The bill, which will fully come into effect in the new year, will result in many adults covered through Medicaid having to meet new work requirements and being subject to more frequent eligibility checks, while there will be less federal funding for states for Medicaid. Hospitals which have already permanently closed their maternity wards include the Centra Southside Community hospital in Virginia, which cited upcoming federal policy changes to Medicaid as a reason. Experts are expecting to see more closures of maternity units in the run-up to and after the federal changes to Medicaid come into effect in the new year.” The Guardian

Deskilling the body

We are, moment by moment, doing less sensing, navigating, remembering, walking, choosing, and attending [and it’s likely that situational awareness via our senses is the dynamic that undergirds and maintains “embodied consciousness,” so….]

“We have fallen into habits that are steadily deskilling the human body, eroding capacities honed by evolution to support our wellbeing as we move through the world. Some of these capacities are weakening through disuse: we have come to rely on our phones, for example, and now, increasingly, on AI, to rapidly do work that would once have required something more physical — like looking around, or asking someone, or going to find and consult a book. Reliance on GPS may weaken both our spatial attention and the fluency of our wayfinding. In surrendering to a quick technological fix, we are, moment by moment, doing less sensing, navigating, remembering, walking, choosing, and attending.” Aeon, tx Semafor

Brazil’s Electoral Disaster Wasn’t Inevitable
An electoral turnaround in the second round of Brazil’s presidential election is possible, however difficult. But the illusion that the left can govern without a long-term project, without confronting the powerful, and without popular mobilization must be left behind

Lula’s third government was a small-bore government. It offered the majorities that elected it neither a clearly better life nor reasons to believe again in politics and its power to transform society. Throughout its four years in office, Lula’s third government was almost invariably associated with the Centrão [“transactional” center-Right]. Here lies its first accommodation: accepting the limits imposed by conservative institutions; avoiding, as much as possible, any attempt to strain those limits through popular pressure; and believing only in the modest changes that could be squeezed through openings in Congress. The Rise and Fall of America’s Most Tireless Socialist
A new biography of Eugene Debs makes clear that in the United States, the story of socialism is really the story of opposition to socialism.

What can the history of American socialism tell us about the present and future of democratic politics? The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in socialism. Shawn Gude’s new book illuminates the forces that shaped America’s foremost socialist evangelist, and the exceptional efforts of his opponents to crush him and his movement. From the beginning of the transformation of the United States into an industrial power, the tycoons, politicians, and judges formed the best-funded union in American history, a cartel that used its bottomless collective pocket to divide and conquer workers. Remembering Dorothy Healey

Dorothy Healey, a longtime leader of the Communist Party in California, then one of the founders of the New America Movement and of NAM’s merger into DSOC to form DSA, was for many years an active member of DSA in Washington, DC (fondly remembered by all who knew and worked with her). She also had a regular program on WPFW — DC’a Pacifica station. Keep that in mind when reading part one of Chris Kutalik’s article about Dorothy posted in California DSA.

Mamdani faces pushback on Israel/Palestine policy as he straddles battling factions

Anti-Israel activists post a purity test that even Mamdani can’t pass

“If pro-Palestinian activists had designed a New York City mayor in a political science lab, they would have strained to do much better than Zohran Mamdani. Galvanizing at a microphone and disarming in person, he has helped guide and expand the Democratic Socialists of America as the Palestinian cause has become a defining D.S.A. focus locally and nationally. The plight of Palestinians has doubled as an early test of the wider left’s capacity to corral its agitators, even with an avowed former agitator in charge. It arrives at a moment when the left generally, and the D.S.A. in particular, is grappling more broadly with how to reconcile its rapid ascent into expanded power with a boisterous, largely hierarchy-averse coalition in which dissent is often encouraged and valorized. Segments of the movement are debating in real time how much latitude Mr. Mamdani and other elected leaders deserve in areas as varied as policing, housing and comportment toward the Trump administration. And the answers can diverge sharply, sometimes dividing 30-something organizers — relative pragmatists who helped put socialists into office — and college-aged activists who remain skeptical about involving the D.S.A. in electoral politics at all.” New York Times

The flame of thought, the magnificence of art, the wonder of discovery, and the audacity of invention all belong to revolutionary periods when humanity, tired of the chains of its restrictions, shatters them, and stops inebriated to breathe the breeze of a vaster and freer horizon.
