Statement in Solidarity with Ilhan Omar

Washington, DC: Metro DC DSA condemns in the strongest possible terms the Trump administration’s raid on Ilhan Omar’s home here in DC. We stand with Representative Omar in the face of this political persecution. Whatever “Border Czar” Tom Homan says, we know that Representative Omar is being targeted for consistently championing working-class demands such as Medicare for All, Abolishing ICE, a Green New Deal, and an Arms Embargo on Apartheid Israel. The October 12th raid marks an alarming escalation in the Trump administration’s attacks on our democratic rights, following earlier attacks on activists like Mahmoud Khalil and the Prairieland defendants.

The repressive powers of the imperial presidency, built on violence against people abroad and at the border, are being turned inwards. Even citizenship offers tenuous protection: a naturalized citizen who dares to oppose Trump faces the ever-growing immigration apparatus and the threat of losing her rights. When an entire class of people is denied rights, fascists will expand that class to encompass all their enemies. Here in DC, where we are denied statehood and subjected to federal occupation, that threat is part of daily life. The same Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officers who carried out this raid routinely police our streets and kidnap our neighbors, making the attack on Representative Omar part of the broader assault on our city and our right to govern ourselves.

To beat back this fascist advance, we must unite our struggles against political repression, for full rights for everyone, regardless of citizenship, and for a Free DC. Only through unity can the working class win the battle for democracy.
