IN FAVOR: Stuart K.
Background This statement is in support of the resolution before the Metro D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America that encourages the establishment of the 2020 D.C. Council Election Working Group. This working group would be the organizing hub for chapter members who are supporting endorsed electoral candidates for D.C. Council seats in the November 3, 2020 general election.
Why I’m Supporting this Resolution I am supporting this resolution because we need a working group to coordinate activities among chapter members who are supporting chapter-endorsed D.C. council candidates in the current election. As a way to facilitate communication among chapter members, the working group will help ensure that volunteer time and resources are used to maximize the collective benefit of all endorsed candidates. We must work to prevent a situation in which candidates and DSA members are competing with each other for volunteers or other chapter resources.
Additionally, the proposed structure of the working group will create clear areas of responsibility and as such will distribute work more evenly across all working group members. This structure includes two co-chairs, two organizers for each endorsed candidate, and one campaign finance compliance officer. Similar working group structures have worked well in supporting chapter-endorsed candidates in the past.
Therefore, I urge Metro D.C. DSA members to vote YES on encouraging the creation of a 2020 D.C. Council Election Working Group.
