Battle of the Slates: DC’s Underreported Elections

On June 16, Democratic primary voters will be choosing their next mayor, council members, and congressional delegate. But one race that has gone nearly unnoticed is the competitive contest for control of the DC Democratic Party State Committee. The DC DemCom receives resources from the national party and sets the party platform, but more importantly, is endowed with significant power under Home Rule — including the ability to appoint interim at-large council members when there’s a vacancy, a likely scenario with Robert White poised to be elected as delegate.

This usually sleepy, uncontested race has two ideologically distinct slates vying for the 48 DemCom seats up for grabs (2 chairs, 14 at-large, and 32 ward), and the winners will set the future of the local Democratic Party.

The Free DC Slate represents the insurgent progressive faction, united in the shared belief that the current Democratic Party has failed to lead in this time of rising fascism. They are running on a platform of transforming the party into a fighting force by investing its resources into direct organizing for local economic policies, instead of serving as a piggy bank for electoral campaigns. The Free DC Slate is generally aligned with Janeese Lewis George’s vision of change, and hosts a number of Metro DC DSA members as candidates.

Democrats United to Free DC (deliberately confusing) is the slate largely made up of the incumbent DemCom members and establishment politicos. Their platform centers their candidates’ collective “experience and institutional knowledge” as a distinctive credential in being able to deliver results for the people of DC. This slate is clearly positioning itself as the business as usual, moderate choice for voters. Though not officially aligned with Kenyan McDuffie, at least 17 members of their 40-person slate made campaign contributions to his mayoral campaign

DC residents will not back down in face of armed intimidation

After more than a year of federal agents and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) working together to kidnap DC community members and use any excuse to wield violence against anyone in their path, masked thugs are stepping it up yet again. On Tuesday evening in Mt. Pleasant, federal agents — including ICE — raised their guns at a concerned bystander for speaking out against the unjust arrest of a community member who was drinking a beer in the warm spring evening. The summer surge promised by the Executive Office of Donald Trump, enabled by his local marionette Mayor Bowser, is being enacted onto the people of DC through the Safe and Beautiful Task Force. This force is likely to escalate violence as more and more masked thugs pour onto the streets of DC.

Metro DC DSA’s endorsed candidates for DC Council, Aparna Raj, and mayor, Janeese Lewis George spoke out against the events from Tuesday evening. Aparna, the only candidate for Ward 1 who has joining community patrols to keep community members safe and testified in front of DC Council, referenced her platform, which echoes the demands of the Families Not Feds coalition: ending MPD’s collaboration with ICE, strengthening the Sanctuary Values Act, and expanding community responder programs among them. On Tuesday, June 2, Aparna is holding a Get Out the Vote rally at Lamont Plaza, where the incident took place, from 6 to 8pm with live music, speakers, and volunteers to answer all voting questions. Janeese, a steadfast champion of rapid responders — joining community patrols and showing up to detentions herself — did the same. Her statement referred readers to her public safety plan, a cornerstone of which is the creation of Community Hubs in all 8 wards to connect people to job programs, mental health services, community-based organizations, and other resources.

With multiple jump-outs from federal officers since Tuesday night’s violence and MPD’s announcement of a Juvenile Curfew Zone for the U Street area this weekend, it will be up to locals to establish their own first line of defense. Anyone wanting to help keep their communities safe should reach out to their neighbors — knowing each other is the first step to true public safety. Follow the Community Defense Working Group’s Instagram for specific updates and ways to get involved. Photos, videos, and tips can be sent to the Film the Police email address (report@filmthepolicedc.org); active enforcement should be called into the DC Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid hotline at (202) 335-1183.

Battle to protect rent stabilization in Takoma Park — tenants planning weekend canvass in preparation for June 10 hearing

Socialists and tenants are organizing to protect rent stabilization in Takoma Park, MD, which has one of the strongest rent stabilization laws in the region. On Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30pm, the Takoma Park City Council will report the results of a rent stabilization study, which local socialists and tenants fear will be used as pretext to weaken Takoma Park’s strong renter protections. Takoma Park tenants and rent stabilization supporters are encouraged to attend the June 10th hearing and testify during the community forum. Locals can RSVP for the hearing here, and those who can’t attend can use this form to share testimony with the campaign to be read during the community forum on June 10.

Before the hearing, the Takoma Park tenants front will be meeting tomorrow, Saturday, May 30 for a canvass to spread the word about the hearing. Tenant organizers will also be convening at the Electric Maid Community Exchange on June 7 to workshop testimony together, get prepared for the hearing, and rally tenants and organizers in the fight.

BRIEFS

In response to ongoing genocide, Maryland’s public pension system divests 85% of Israeli sovereign bond

In a major win for internationalist organizers in Maryland, it was announced this week that Maryland’s public pension system has divested approximately 85% of Israeli sovereign bonds it held less than a year ago, cutting holdings from $73.7 million in July 2025 to about $11 million by March 2026. That amounts to more than $62 million divested from Israeli bonds — the largest known state-level divestment from Israeli sovereign bonds to date.

This victory belongs to civil rights advocates, public workers, retirees, faith leaders, labor partners, students, organizers, and Maryland residents who refused to accept public pension funds being used to provide unrestricted loans to a government carrying out genocide, apartheid, occupation, and mass human rights abuses. A campaign — Break the Bonds — has been waged by a wide front of internationalists in Maryland. Despite this success, the fight is not over. Maryland’s pension system still reportedly holds millions in Israeli bonds and could repurchase more at any time. The Break the Bonds Coalition is demanding permanent policy change, full transparency, stronger ethical investment standards, and a complete end to Maryland’s investment in Israeli sovereign bonds. Read more from CAIR Maryland.

Locals are set to celebrate the historic victory, and plan next steps, at a June 17 meeting in McKeldin Plaza in Baltimore.

BRIEFING!
Electoral update

MDC DSA is showing the establishment what people-powered campaigns look like across the DMV.

In DC:

With 20 days left until the June 16th primary, we need YOUR help knocking doors on Saturday, May 30 from 11am to 4pm in Park View and Sunday, May 31 from 11am to 4pm in Pleasant Plains for Aparna Raj. Join DSA members while we talk to Ward 1 neighbors about the most progressive, grassroots, labor-centered campaign in the ward.

We’ll also be phonebanking DSA members in-person near the U St Corridor on Wednesday, June 3 from 5:30 to 7:30pm to turn folks out to our canvasses! Training and free pizza will be provided.

Finally, we need DSA members to help staff Ward 1 poll sites during early voting and Election Day to have conversations with voters about Aparna and Janeese Lewis George! Sign up today to staff poll sites in Ward 1 during early voting (Monday, June 8 to Sundat, June 14) and Election Day (Tuesday, June 16).

Attention Marylanders!

Due to a printing error, ALL mail-in ballots requested on or before May 14 have been voided! These ballots will not count; you MUST instead turn in your replacement ballot for your vote to be counted. The Board of Elections should reach out via email to notify you of this – look for a ballot that says “REPLACEMENT BALLOT” if you are impacted. Be sure to spread this info far and wide, as potentially hundreds of impacted voters will not find out and have their ballots thrown out. For the full details, check out the MD BOE website.

In Montgomery County:

Our cadre candidate Josie Caballero is in one of the most crowded races the county has ever seen. Mail-in ballots are being returned, and early voting is around the corner – every week is the LAST opportunity to talk to hundreds of voters who vote early. We need all hands on deck! Canvasses will be held Saturday at 9am and 3pm and Sunday at 9am and 3pm at Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park (599 Bennington Dr, Silver Spring, MD 20910). Training, rides to doors, and buddies will be provided to all who need them.

Josie will also launch a Wednesday canvas at 5:30pm from Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park (599 BENNINGTON Dr, Silver Spring, MD 20910). Canvassing Wednesday evenings will continue until the primary!

Our cadre candidate Gabe Acevero has built a broad coalition of labor unions, immigrant rights collectives, and progressive advocacy groups – and that is why ANOTHER centrist slate has been formed to attempt to kick him out of office. The oppositional slate has mobilized their forces at the doors. Mail-in ballots are being returned, and early voting is around the corner. Every week is the LAST opportunity to talk to hundreds of voters who vote early.  The canvas will launch Saturday at 10am and 1pm and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm at William B. Gibbs Elementary (12615 Royal Crown Dr., Germantown, MD 20876). Let’s show that people power beats money!

Lastly, we are looking for volunteers to help with poll staffing on June 23! If you are interested, please reach out to Eric (ericfowler24@gmail.com) for more info!

And in Prince George’s County:

This weekend, we will continue to go all out for Imara Crooms, candidate to represent District 9 on Prince George’s County Council, and Raaheela Ahmed, candidate to represent District 23 in the Maryland Senate, by knocking doors for Imara at 10am on Saturday from Branch Avenue Metro Station. We will have a joint canvass for both Imara and Raaheela at 2pm on Sunday, launching from Rosaryville Elementary School in Upper Marlboro. We will also be phone-banking for our endorsed incumbent councilmember Shayla Adams Stafford at 6pm next Tuesday, June 2. These campaigns are heating up, and we will need to go all out to overcome the predictable attacks from defenders of the failed status quo. Anyone who would like to play a more active role in supporting these campaigns should post in the Prince George’s County channel on Slack to get connected to the branch’s Electoral Working Group.

Interested in getting involved with Metro DC DSA’s electoral work, but not sure where to plug in? Fill out our electoral volunteer interest form here! Or, you can join our Electoral 101 Training meeting next month to learn the ins and outs of DSA’s electoral strategy and how to canvass!

Stomp Out Slumlords to hold Anti-Eviction Canvass and Tenant Block Party — canvass on May 30, party on June 7

This Saturday, May 30, Metro DC DSA’s tenant organizing arm, Stomp Out Slumlords, will be carrying out its monthly anti-eviction canvass. Canvassers will inform tenants facing eviction of their rights in court, how to get a lawyer, and see if tenants are interested in organizing their building. Tenants reached by SOS’ efforts are twice as likely to go to court and fight their eviction, so every volunteer can make a big impact. RSVP here.

And on June 7, SOS will be holding a tenant unit block party in the Tivoli Gardens Community Garden in DC. The party will have food, music, activities, and an opportunity to connect with organizers on the fight for tenant power in DC. RSVP here. Interested in helping plan the party? Fill out this form and note that you want to help with the block party in the last text box.

BRIEFING!
FUN happy hour and monthly in-person workers circle — Wednesday, June 3

Come meet fellow rank-and-file federal unionists (and friends) at the Federal Unionist Network DMV Hub’s monthly happy hour on Wednesday, June 3 at 6pm. Workers will be back at our summer location, Aslin Beer Garden, just a few blocks from the U Street Metro station. Attendees will be sharing about upcoming events and building community with fellow feds, contractors, and friends. Then, on Monday June 8 at 6:30pm, build community and solidarity with other workers over shared labor struggle. Participants will circle up to explore the unique issues we’re facing in our workplaces, brainstorm organizing strategies to solve those issues, and learn from one another on what’s working and what’s not. RSVP here

The DMV Hub of Federal Unionists Network (FUN) is an informal association of federal unionists and our allies organizing to strengthen our unions, improve our agencies, and build solidarity across the federal sector of the labor movement in the DMV region. The DC Workplace Organizing Committee (DCWOC) is a volunteer-run network of hundreds of workers, organizers, and supporters who together are building a stronger, worker-led labor movement. ROC-DC is an organization led by workers, for workers, and with workers — fighting to improve wages and improve working conditions in order to create a more just, equitable, and dignified restaurant industry.

INFO ACCESS

Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America, uniting the DMV, is one of a number of big urban DSA chapters — and many more compact but potent ones within the country’s Blue AND Red corridors — that are building a true political Left across the US. All this as Trump, flailing, seeks a nationalist rush with brain-dead warmaking, and ill-trained ICE paramilitary irregulars layer white-nationalist terrorism atop our everyday capitalist yoke. This is the terrain on which we fight back, gain allies, and, more often every day, win.

ESSENTIAL PERSPECTIVES

ESSENTIAL PERSPECTIVES are articles and opinion pieces of interest to DMV leftists but not, generally, appearing in local media. They should have links without paywalls. Readers are invited to submit candidates at our tip line.

The Democrats’ 2024 autopsy fails to confront the truth about Gaza’s ruinous effect on Harris campaign
A wide detour around clear polling data was necessary to keep out of the autopsy the reality of measurable damage that Harris’s support for arming Israel did to her campaign. In August 2024, an IMEU/YouGov poll in three swing states found that for every vote Harris might lose by supporting an arms embargo on Israel, she stood to gain five votes. The mindset that chose to block such facts from getting into the autopsy was consistent with the way that the DNC has automatically functioned. The Guardian

Beyond Westminster’s Chaos, a New Grassroots Left Is Taking Shape
As Keir Starmer fights for survival, Jeremy Corbyn’s decade-long grassroots strategy may yet have the last word.

Within months [of Corbyn’s installation], there was a fully-fledged parliamentary revolt, with many of Corbyn’s shadow cabinet resigning. He remained firm, replacing ministers and facing off a leadership challenge triggered in June 2016 when 172 Labour MPs voted against him in a no-confidence motion, while only 40 backed him. But outside of Parliament, Corbyn’s popularity was soaring. A reinvigorated and much enlarged party membership was voicing its support for his progressive politics, and interest was emerging in what he stood for from well beyond the membership. openDemocracy

NYC’s Economic Development Corporation Can Build Public Options

Resisting Regime Change in Cuba
Since the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the United States has sought “by any means necessary” to throttle the socialist society being born, to prevent the spread of an alternative model.  Today, for the first time since the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, this has taken the form of possible direct U.S. aggression.  Margorie Cohn, in her “Resisting Regime Change in Cuba,” retraces that history to understand current dangers. Boots Riley: “Theft is not outside of capitalism, it’s what it was built on”
Don’t call Boots Riley an anti-capitalist, at least not without qualification. “I’m a communist,” he clarifies. “A lot of stuff that calls itself anti-capitalist is doing so because they’re afraid of calling themselves socialist or communist or something else.” […] His latest film, I Love Boosters, turns shoplifting into a Robin Hood–style proletarian allegory, where stealing itself is a mode of survival. And it arrives amid renewed debate over retail theft, with some on the left framing small-scale “boosting” as a form of resistance, and labor advocates warning that it ultimately harms workers while giving retailers cover to escalate enforcement and pursue felony charges. “Theft is not outside of capitalism; it’s what capitalism was built on — and not even, like, metaphorically,” Riley says. “The bourgeoisie was no different in that they stole land, stole minerals, stole labor. But that theft is thought of as legal.” The Guardian

Department of Labor Tells Employees to Report Anyone Prioritizing DEI
An email reminds workers they can report behavior that predates Donald Trump’s second inauguration. One employee tells WIRED it felt like a “reminder to narc on your coworkers.”Late last week, employees at the Department of Labor received a long email strongly urging them to file whistleblower complaints and report instances of “diversity, equity, and inclusion”–related discrimination or retaliation. In short, employees were told to alert the government of DEI compliance in any way. The email, sent on Friday and viewed by WIRED, felt like it was a “reminder to narc on your coworkers for doing DEI,” says a DOL employee who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation. The notice was titled “Reporting DEI-Related Discrimination, Retaliation, and Related Whistleblower Disclosures” and came from a “DOL Guidance and Information” email account. It was not signed by any particular member of DOL leadership. WIRED

The Politics of Purity and the War on Venezuela
Venezuela was the first victim of the Trump Administration’s illegal use of military might to assert US power in a sovereign land.  The character of the current Venezuelan government is often expressed in sweeping judgments of what should or should not be done.  Celina Della Croce in her “The Politics of Purity and the War on Venezuela,” digs beneath the surface.  Meanwhile we should remember that the most important lesson here should be that we must build a stronger anti-war movement that stays the hand of US militarism. The flame of thought, the magnificence of art, the wonder of discovery, and the audacity of invention all belong to revolutionary periods when humanity, tired of the chains of its restrictions, shatters them, and stops inebriated to breathe the breeze of a vaster and freer horizon.
