New Member Guide
We’re so excited to have you as a member of Metro DC DSA. DSA is the largest and fastest growing socialist organization in the United States. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to get done. We need all hands on deck to fight for social and economic justice and for a socialist future. Whether this is your first time becoming politically involved or you’re a veteran activist, there’s a place for you in the organization. Use the information below to stay in the loop on chapter news and events, and to get connected with other members on projects and initiatives. Here are 4 ways for you to get plugged in as a socialist organizer in the DMV.
We have a bunch of ways for members to stay connected around events and actions. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and subscribe to our email list if you haven’t already. Please respond to our Member Survey on Interests and Skills, which only takes a few minutes and helps us get you plugged-in. We also have a Facebook Group where members discuss local action and national events. The main way to get involved in the business of the chapter is to join our chapter Slack. You should have received an invitation link in your welcome email when you joined but if you can’t find it, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll get you sorted. Become a dues paying member here.
Come to an event
The main event we ask all members to make time to attend is our monthly General Body Meetings or “GBM”. The GBM is held the second Sunday of every month and is the place where members discuss the work of the chapter, talk about upcoming events, and vote on decisions about how to run our organization. We also have events and actions happening all month long. For a full calendar of events check out our Meet Up page where all chapter activity is posted.
Come to Night School
The Socialist Night School is a series of sessions that explore basic ideas, concepts and historical events related to socialism. It is open to all but geared towards people that are newer to socialism and to DSA. Familiarity with socialist theory is not assumed. Sessions typically end with information about ways you can get involved in the chapter. Learn more about past events at the Socialist Night School website. Upcoming Night Schools can be found on our events page.
Sign up for monthly dues
Our ability to fight for a socialist future is based on our ability to maintain a self-funded organization of working people while ensuring no member is ever turned away for inability to pay. If you already signed up for yearly dues, then you’re already a full member. But we ask that members consider switching to monthly dues. These monthly dues allow DSA to carry out critical work such as starting new chapters, national educational events, and supporting our youth program, Young Democratic Socialists of America. A portion also goes directly to our local chapter every month to help fund our organizing work in the DMV. On average monthly dues paying members set their dues at around $10.00 a month. If you have any questions about dues, check out this FAQ. We’re really glad to have you as a member. We hope this information helps you get active and involved in the crucial work of fighting for a socialist future. If you have any questions–about the chapter, your membership, or DSA–check out the #helpdesk channel in Slack, or send an email to email@example.com. Welcome to Metro DC DSA.
