After an extensive endorsement process, the Metro DC Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America has voted by 96% to endorse Janeese Lewis George for her reelection to Ward 4 of the DC Council.
Since her first campaign successfully unseated a corporate-backed incumbent, Councilmember Lewis George has been a constant champion for the people. She understands the realities that families, workers, and tenants face and governs every day with empathy to those realities. In her first term, she championed a tax on the wealthiest residents of DC, which funded direct payments to underpaid childcare workers. She has advocated to expand rent control in the city, led on a Green New Deal for Social Housing, and has introduced legislation to hold slumlords accountable for terrible living conditions.
Drawing on her experience as a former tipped worker, Janeese Lewis George publicly advocated for Initiative 82 to raise the tipped minimum wage in DC. Since Initiative 82’s passage, she has worked to oppose legislation backed by the restaurant lobby that would undermine the initiative and promote junk fees. She closed a loophole that employers used to pay workers less than the minimum wage, and funded protections for domestic workers, one of the most vulnerable industries for workers.
There is no question which Ward 4 candidate will govern for the people instead of for corporations, developers, and lobbyists. Janeese Lewis George is a candidate and a Councilmember for the many, not the few, and Metro DC DSA members are thrilled to support her people-powered campaign.
