As general election approaches, Metro DC DSA releases statement on DC’s new ranked choice voting system
Election season is ramping up to its vitriolic climax, and socialists across DC, Maryland, and Virginia are hitting the pavement to win electoral gains that will help build working-class power across the region.
For DC Voters: The Metro DC DSA Steering Committee has released the following statement, encouraging leftists in DC to vote strategically in the District’s At-Large council race:
“In just a few short weeks, folks around the country will be heading to the polls to vote in the general elections. For those in DC, this vote will include the vote for mayor, At-Large councilmembers, and ward-level councilmembers. This will be the first general election in DC run using the ranked choice voting (RCV) system implemented after the passage of I83. Most of the elections will run in a relatively straightforward way — you will rank the candidates available for each seat by your preference, and your vote will transfer to your next highest ranked candidate if your preferred candidate is eliminated.
“The At-Large election, however, is anything but straightforward. In short, the way RCV was implemented means that most DC residents will functionally get only one vote for two seats. While somewhat unlikely, it is not impossible that voting patterns and a disciplined bloc of Republicans could secure a seat on the council. The Chapter has not endorsed any candidates in the At-Large council race, but the Steering Committee does suggest that members strategically vote to ensure that the most right-wing elements do not accidentally walk into the John Wilson building. A strategic vote in this election would be to rank the independent first and then the Democrat second in the At-Large council race.”
Meanwhile, in Maryland: Progressives in Prince George’s County are escalating mobilizations for endorsed candidate Briana Urbina’s New Carrollton mayoral campaign for the special election to take place November 9. Metro DC DSA members knocked exactly 400 doors last weekend, anchoring over 60 conversations with voters. Socialists and allies have plenty of opportunities to help elect this pro-worker champion in one of PG County’s most diverse cities: MDC DSA will conduct door-knocking operations every weekend day between now and the November 9 Election Day and distribute voting guides at polling locations on November 3 and 9. See mobilization schedule and sign up to support Urbina’s campaign here.
Election Night Watch Party: While socialists in PG County have their sights set on November 9, November 3 will be a pivotal day as election results roll in across the DMV and nationwide. Celebrate a new wave of progressive federal, state, and local electees up and down the ballot with comrades at the joint Metro DC DSA / Congressional Progressive Staff Association Election Night Watch Party, set for 7pm at Hook Hall (3400 Georgia Avenue NW). Following midterms, socialists will continue to build strength for the fight ahead. RSVP here for the Election Night Watch Party.
TENANT VICTORY IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY: Council bans algorithmic rental pricing and moves towards preventing housing discrimination based on immigration status
This past Tuesday, the Montgomery County Council voted unanimously to ban the use of algorithms in setting rental prices in a monumental win against the landlord lobby. This move comes in the wake of a similar law passed in Rockville, MD, earlier this year under pressure from tenants. Across the region, both DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb and Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown have filed lawsuits against RealPage, a rental software company, for violating antitrust laws in order to inflate rents. In September, two local landlords, JBG Smith and Mid America Apartments, agreed to pay $9.3 million to settle the DC-based lawsuit.
Separately, the Montgomery County Council’s Planning, Housing and Parks Committee voted to advance Bill 38-26 (Discriminatory Housing Practices and Early Lease Termination), with amendments to reinforce it. This bill makes it illegal for landlords to discriminate against tenants based on immigration status and allows tenants to break their leases if a member of the household is deported or detained by ICE. Maryland residents are encouraged to send this letter to councilmembers urging them to pass this bill to protect themselves, their neighbors, and their communities.
BRIEFS
Fight back against the occupation of DC with the Community Defense and Abolition Working Groups — Key events on October 24 and 27
Heightened activity from federal law enforcement and the National Guard has had devastating impacts on DC’s communities with the Metropolitan Police Department’s full cooperation and complicity. Community members must come together, make their voices heard, and fight for a DC government that puts real safety first. The Judiciary and Public Safety Committee is holding a public safety hearing on Thursday, November 5; witnesses can testify on three different public safety-related acts, including Janeese Lewis George’s Safe Community Places and Policing Amendment Act, and the District’s heightened federal law enforcement and National Guard presence.
The Community Defense and Abolition Working Groups are each holding testimony preparation sessions ahead of the hearing to outfit those interested in testifying with the skills needed to be successful. Join the Community Defense Working Group and Families Not Feds coalition TOMORROW, Saturday, October 24 at 11:30am at the Mt. Pleasant Library (3160 16th Street NW) for their community meeting and testimony preparation session. The session will give attendees the space to discuss their firsthand experiences with the DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force and establish collective community demands for elected officials. Join the Abolition Working Group on Tuesday, October 27 at 7pm on Zoom for their testimony preparation session, where attendees will learn best testimony practices and start writing their own.
Register to submit oral or written testimony to the November 5 hearing here.
Labor Working Group to host organizing conversations training — Saturday, October 24 at 2pm
On Saturday, October 24 (tomorrow), MDC DSA’s Labor Working Group will be hosting an in-person training on how to hold conversations with others about organizing. This training is an open, hands-on space for new organizers and experienced community builders alike to practice key organizing conversations, with a focus on house visits (but not limited to them). This event will help DSA members grow their organizational conversation skills through practical role-play and collaborative discussion. Participants will learn how to connect with coworkers, build toward collective action in their own workplaces, and navigate real-life workplace scenarios. RSVP here to build confidence, share insights, and help develop the DMV’s labor movement.
Already organized and ready to take the next step? Join fellow union members and union-curious comrades at the UNITE HERE Local 25 office (901 K Street, NW, Suite 200) on November 8 at 3pm for the Labor Working Group’s Labor Organizer Training on Collective Action & Political Struggle On the Job. This training session is designed for shop stewards and other rank-and-file union members across the DMV, and will cover topics like developing internal organizing campaigns and fostering a more militant labor movement on the shop floor (and beyond). Learn more and RSVP for the training here.
Voices & Memories festival: Resisting Detention — October 24 at 3:30pm
The Free Them All Virginia coalition is partnering with Detention Watch Network to support their “Disappeared in America” national days of action. Join for the Voices & Memories festival on Saturday, October 24, 3:30pm – 7:30pm, to build community, remember the disappeared, and resist the ICE detention machine. The Metro DC DSA Steering Committee has endorsed this event.
Activities will include a potluck, music, family arts and crafts, writing letters to those detained at the Farmville Detention Center, Day of the Dead altars, and an exhibit of artwork created by people in detention. Interpretation will be provided in English and Spanish. The event will be in Arlington, VA; for community safety, the exact location will be provided only to registered attendees the day before the event. More info here and RSVP for the festival here.
Socialists, nurses, and DC residents plan rally to protect patients and the working class — Tuesday, October 27 at 5:45pm
As part of a national day of action to defend patients’ already limited access to vital healthcare, and their broader right to vote, from authoritarian overreach, DSA members will rally alongside National Nurses United and others in the District on Tuesday, October 27. The march will begin in Chinatown Park (5th Street NW/I Street NW intersection) at 5:45pm and proceed to the DC headquarters of Risant Health (900 7th Street NW), a Kaiser affiliate. Aparna Raj, MDC DSA organizer and Democratic nominee for DC Council, will also be present. This rally will spotlight healthcare executives who have sacrificed patients’ lives and irreparably damaged the communities they claim to serve in exchange for money from the ruling technofascist capitalist class. It calls on them to refuse collaboration with ICE cronies who violate patient safety by storming hospitals and protected healthcare spaces, support the validity of every vote counted during this midterm election season (and beyond), divest from all partnerships with authoritarian corporations like Palantir, and protect the rights of workers to organize. Learn more and register to attend the rally here.
Socialist Night School: Slavery and Capitalism — Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30pm
Metro DC DSA’s Political Education Working Group is planning to hold an upcoming session of the long-running Socialist Night School series next Wednesday, October 28. The session, on Slavery and Capitalism, will explore the interrelated histories of capitalism and slavery, how the creation of the plantation system became the engine for capitalism, and the relationship between slavery and the development of race. It will also feature histories of resistance from enslaved peoples as well as explain how the links between capitalism and slavery continue to shape our world today. This is a hybrid event, with options to attend both in person at MLK Library, Room 401-A (901 G Street NW), and on Zoom. RSVP for the Socialist Night School session here.
DSA launches national arms embargo campaign for Palestine; MDC DSA to host local launch party — Thursday, October 29 at 7:30pm
More than three years into Israel’s escalated genocide of Palestine, the United States remains the rogue actor’s greatest enabler. American “defense” contractors manufacture weapons that unleash increasingly horrific violence, while American transportation logistics make the movement of these devastating weapons to Israel possible. Recent research from Democratic Socialists of America, Palestinian Youth Movement, Movement Research Unit, and People’s Embargo for Palestine reveals the DMV’s very own Dulles International Airport (IAD) to be one of at least nine US airports illicitly transporting military materials and weapons components marked for Israel alongside passenger cargo on civilian flights.
In response, DSA is launching its National Arms Embargo Campaign, a grassroots, worker-first push for an arms embargo. Metro DC DSA is helping lead this fight to organize and mobilize DMV workers and end IAD’s complicity in the US network enabling genocide. RSVP here to attend the chapter’s in-person launch event on October 29 at 7:30pm, at Palestine House of Freedom (650 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Suite 50), to practice power mapping and develop campaign strategy prior to tuning into the national call with comrades. Alternatively, RSVP here to attend virtually and join the national call at 8:30pm.
Metro DC DSA plans to distribute Narcan and sexual health supplies throughout November
Metro DC DSA’s Bodily Autonomy Working Group is planning broad public health outreach at Transmission DC (1353 H Street NE), one of the DC region’s premier dance halls, on weekend evenings throughout November. - Spanish Club Mt. Pleasant at St. Stephens — Monday, October 26 at 7pm
- Spanish Club Online via Zoom — Wednesday, October 28 at 7pm
INFO ACCESS
In summer 2025, Trump unleashed his paramilitary puppet force of National Guard troops and ICE agents to occupy, threaten, and terrorize our neighbors throughout the DMV. In the year-plus of oppression, MDC DSA has been up front among progressive forces who have contested these goons, pushing back against extrajudicial kidnappings, violence, and chaos meant to coerce the DMV (and the US at large) into capitulating to fascism. Metro DC DSA and community allies of the deep-rooted DMV Left continue to resist these brownshirt forces and their orange overlord with community actions, providing educational resources and mass trainings to empower working people to make the fight theirs. Nationally, DSA’s growth into a 120,000-plus-member force has galvanized the working classes across Blue and Red corridors alike, those whom other politicians across the spectrum have long abandoned.
This is a movement that leads with the declared elements of socialist transformation by and for the worker who gets a paycheck signed by a boss. ESSENTIAL PERSPECTIVES
ESSENTIAL PERSPECTIVES are articles and opinion pieces of interest to DMV leftists but not, generally, appearing in local media. They should have links without paywalls. Readers are invited to submit candidates at our tip line.
Inequality In The US Is Getting Worse In Ways You Might Not Expect
The buzzword of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections may be affordability, but growing anger over inequality is behind the sentiment.
A Pew Research survey released in October 2026 found that roughly 6 in 10 Americans — including 4 in 10 Republicans — believe there’s too much inequality in the U.S. And a growing share from both major political parties state that the economy needs to be fundamentally rebuilt to address this. The trend of rising inequality since 1980 has been driven by the wealthiest pulling away not just from the middle class, but also from the “merely wealthy.” Overall, recent research underscores how policy choices — including taxation and public spending — enabled this 40-year rise in inequality. Some policies enacted more recently appear to be accelerating this trend. An analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a nonpartisan research organization, concluded that policy changes since the start of 2025 have imposed higher costs on everyone except the top 1%. Metal of the Past, Metal of the Future
Copper, the first metal worked by humans, will be crucial to decarbonization, and could be the path to a Chinese Century. As union turmoil in Chile’s critical copper industry rattles world supplies, our comrade Bill Barclay explores the metal’s past and future.
Copper was the first metal worked by homo sapiens—and was the basis of the Bronze Age, a period that lasted more than a millennium. Bronze metallurgy shifted the balance of power between empires and provided tools to increase agricultural output to those empires with the ability to meld copper and tin.Today, copper is the critical element for decarbonization. Once again, leadership, in this case in copper mining and processing, will reshape the global balance of power and reorganize the global political economy. Dollars and Sense
AI’s Rise is Being Fueled by the Sprawling U.S. Military State
Can an increasingly precarious tech workforce be a site of antiwar resistance?
Hossam Nasr was never under the impression that his employer, Microsoft. is a force for good, but says he “did genuinely believe it to be one of the lesser evil big tech companies.” Then he discovered the cloud storage service he worked on, Azure, provided the Israeli military with artificial intelligence tools essential to the post-October 2023 onslaught on Gaza. Silicon Valley sells itself as an engine for human progress, in which technology can conquer problems and improve society. But in subsequently protesting his employer, Nasr joined an increasingly vocal minority of tech workers who are so concerned about their own complicity in war crimes they are risking their jobs to organize against their companies’ war production. “Tech workers at the heart of Microsoft are waging one of the most significant and under-covered labor battles in the U.S. right now,” labor journalist Maximillian Alvarez has reported. In These Times
Apocalypse Now and Then
Artificial intelligence is capitalism’s final destination
The auguries are raining down hard. Think or Sink. Comply or Die. Look Up or be Left Out. And so, with these not-so-gentle threats, it has come to pass that the Age of AI – Actual Idiocy, Actual Super Idiocy, Recursive Snowballing-Idiocy – is upon us. Heck, I’ve already used two dashes in this opening paragraph. That, as they say, is a tell. So, perhaps I haven’t written this essay at all. You’d have to use an AI app to check if it’s actually AI, and whether I’m really, or not really, or only partially me. You can no longer use your instincts. You have to use the App. Now that AI owns the em dash, what will future generations make of Emily Dickinson and her love of them? Has she been fed to the machine, too? Will they love her less? Are we being gradually locked out of language? Does it matter anymore? Arundhati Roy [maybe?] writes in Equator via 5 Leftie Links
Unions Are the Key to America’s Cost of Living Crisis
A promise of a union is that workers will share in the profit they create. As soon as wealthy executives saw their bottom lines under threat, they attacked unions. The research proves what workers have always known: It’s better in a union.
Union contracts raise pay for workers. A new report from the Economic Policy Institute shows that tripling union membership in this country would deliver a 14.5% raise to the median worker—more than $7,700 a year or the equivalent of 7.5 extra weeks of pay annually. This adds up to nearly $270,000 over a 35-year career. Unions can also be powerful tools for combating racial pay discrimination; the new report shows tripling union membership would narrow the racial wage gap by more than a third.Tripling union density wouldn’t only benefit union members. Nonunion workers would also see large raises, because strong unions lift standards across the economy. AFL-CIO prez Liz Shuler and EPI economist Heidi Shierholtz share a byline in TIME magazine, via Portside
How ‘You Can See Everything’ Exacts Hollywood’s Revenge on Big Tech
Along with ‘Artificial,’ ‘Musk’ and ‘The Social Reckoning,’ the storytellers are finally getting back at the engineers
AI will generate plenty of memeslop and cost-cutting; anyone who comes out of these movies thinking the great automation battle has been won in Hollywood, let alone the world, is either naive or self-deceiving. But it would be equally misguided to emerge into the daylight and think the films won’t matter at all, that a strong injection of anti-oligarchal humanity won’t course through the collective blood or change social views — that a long-term grudge, really, won’t be settled in some very productive ways. The Hollywood Reporter via Portside
The flame of thought, the magnificence of art, the wonder of discovery, and the audacity of invention all belong to revolutionary periods when humanity, tired of the chains of its restrictions, shatters them, and stops inebriated to breathe the breeze of a vaster and freer horizon.
