UPDATE on Statement on Senate Joint Resolution 54

UPDATE:

We have recently learned that a bogus, so-called “compromise” resolution, S.J. Res. 55, has been submitted for consideration in place of the bill we support. Res. 55 simply calls for the Secretary of State, who will now be Mike Pompeo, to certify that Saudi Arabia is negotiating to end the war and taking measures to end the humanitarian crisis. The language in this bill mirrors similar toothless resolutions passed in the 1980’s over the civil war in El Salvador, which only perpetuated US support for military atrocities against the civilian population. The Nation provides additional information on the ineffectiveness of S.J. Res. 55 (Link).

We can’t predict when a vote will happen, but our coalition partners have been told that it could come on either Tuesday the 20th or Wednesday the 21st. We’ve provided another script below for our members to use when calling. Please take 5 minutes to call your senators and tell them to support the original resolution, Sen. Sanders’ S.J. Res. 54.

Maryland Residents: Call Senator Ben Cardin’s office at (202) 224-4524.
Virginia Residents: Call Senator Tim Kaine’s office at (202) 224-4024 and Senator Mark Warner’s office at (202) 224-2023
DC Residents: Senate Office Directory

Updated Script:

“Hi, my name is (Name), I live in (City), and I am a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

I am calling to urge Senator (Name) to support Joint Resolution 54, submitted last week by Senator Bernie Sanders, which invokes the War Powers Act and calls for an end to US military support for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen. I also want Senator (Name) to oppose Joint Resolution 55, the Young-Shaheen resolution that undermines the effort to end the crisis in Yemen. The Saudi-led campaign and blockade of Yemen, which could only be carried out with US aid, has led to a humanitarian disaster, and I ask that Senator (Name) take a stand by supporting Resolution 54 and opposing Resolution 55.”

Original statement:

Senators Bernie Sanders, Mike Lee, and Chris Murphy have introduced Senate Joint Resolution 54, which calls to end the US’s illegal support for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen by invoking the War Powers Resolution of 1973. This joint resolution is crucial to ending the devastation in Yemen, as the Saudi forces would not be able to sustain their hostilities without US support. To further worsen the atrocities of war, Yemen is currently suffering the largest cholera outbreak in history.

Metro DC DSA reaffirms its opposition to war in all its forms and to the imperialist policies which fuel them. Metro DC DSA commends Senators Sanders, Lee, and Murphy, and fully endorses Senate Joint Resolution 54.

Sen. Sanders’ resolution could go to a vote as early as Monday, March 12. Thus, Metro DC DSA is asking you to please take 5 minutes today to call your senator (or, if you’re in DC, any senator of your choosing) and ask them to support Sen. Sanders’ resolution. The senate phone numbers are below, along with a quick script.

Maryland Residents: Call Senator Ben Cardin’s office at (202) 224-4524.
Virginia Residents: Call Senator Tim Kaine’s office at (202) 224-4024 and Senator Mark Warner’s office at (202) 224-2023
